The FIFA Club World Cup (CMC) is a football competition created in 2000 for men's football clubs, organized by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). In addition to the champion club of the host country of the tournament, the continental champion clubs of the six football confederations take part in the competition. These are the winners of the UEFA Champions League , Copa Libertadores , CAF Champions League , AFC Champions League, CONCACAF Champions League and OFC Champions League . The tournament officially awards ( de jure ) the title of world champion 1 , 2 , 3 .

After a first edition in 2000 and another canceled in 2001 , the competition then called the FIFA Club World Championship in 2005 took over from the Intercontinental Cup which, since 1960, has opposed the champion clubs of Europe and South America. . In 2006, it was renamed the FIFA Club World Cup. The test then takes place every year. The winning teams were honored by the media, by the international sporting community and by FIFA itself (with texts from News Center productions and not listed on the FIFA website as official entity documents) with the honorary title ( de facto ) of world champion 5 . In 2017 , the FIFA Council recognized with an official document ( de jure ) all the champions of the Intercontinental Cup with the official title 6 of world champion football clubs, that is to say with the title of champions of the FIFA World Cup, initially awarded only to FIFA Club World Cup winners.

European and South American clubs dominate the competition, with twelve editions being won by clubs from member countries of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), and four by teams from member nations of the South American Confederation of football (CONMEBOL). Over the years, however, the balance between European and South American teams that characterized the Intercontinental Cup has disappeared due to the economic gap between the two continents and above all to the rules on foreign players which have gradually favored them.
